Woo!  Another sketchy sketch day!  So, I’ve been a bit quiet on this whole internet front lately, I know, I know.  It’s because I’ve been radically changing how I go about making comics, more or less.  You know, not really a big deal or anything.  I’ve been recently exploring the magical world of Everything That Isn’t a Micron Pen, and oh man!  There’s so many cool ways to draw out there!  I drew this feisty-looking lady with a blue pencil (Staedtler, is there nothing you can’t do?), and then inked using a REAL INDIA INK with a REAL BRUSH.  Gadzooks!  So much fun!  Too much fun!  I should try to find out if it’s illegal to have this much fun doodling about.

Anyhoo, I’ve taken a big departure from the world of Digital Comics for now.  Who knows, maybe I’ll go back to it later, maybe I won’t.  Not to be knocking digital comics of course!  John Allison’s Bad Machinery is one of the best things I’ve ever read, and he does practically all his work on the computer.  In fact, it was what I was striving for when I first started doing the computer comics.  Not that I am anywhere near as skilled yet, but I imagine that someday I’ll get close, at least.  Check it out, it’s great.  In the meantime, I’m finishing up that minicomic I’ve been yelling about for a while, and then I want to really start sinking my teeth into Monsters again.  Stick around!  I have plans!   Muahahahaha.

I want to give a big thanks to Kevin Church for his kind link and critique yesterday.  Kevin writes The Loneliest Astronauts among other things, and it’s a really great one.  Lots of fun.  So, in celebration and a treat for everyone who stumbled over here from there, a look behind the scenes at my current process.  I’m still taking a break from Monsters for a little bit while I finish working on a ten-pager minicomic-type thing, but then it will be back in full force.  Hooray!

More watercolors!  I’ve been getting more practice in with this stuff, and I really like the look.  Nice textures, plus it works well with my more cartoony style.  Cheers!

Sketches!  Just to prove that I’m still here and not just lazing around.  I’m getting back into hand drawn stuff!  And watercolors.  I think they look neat, and they’d be a good fit for what I want to do with this comic, and comics in general.  I’m busy working on a short, non-monsters related piece right now that I want to finish before really settling back into this guy, as well as getting together a bunch of Monsters comics before I start posting again, since doing it this way will take a little more time and I’m tired of trying to rush them out the night before.  It’s sloppy and I’m ready to not be sloppy anymore.  Anyhoo, hope you guys like this preview of the new look!

Another Sketch Day!  Sorry about the cliffhanger folks, but I spent this weekend visiting the Center for Cartoon Studies up in Vermont (where I had a great time and even got a portfolio review from Jason Lutes), and I need a little time to absorb things about comics into my head.  I got some great feedback from Jason about the comic, and what I should work on, and I want to take a little time to work on some other pieces and try out some new things, but Monsters will be back!  Probably next week.  Until then, enjoy this sketch of Scout and Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird, which I saw on TV the other night.  Great film!

He’s back!  I watched more classic Doctor Who, and it struck me how they actually did some cool things with the companions, like have them be cavewomen, or other Time Lords, or from the future, or made out of pudding, etc., and as much as I love new Who, I wish they would do some other things!  So, I figured what if the Doctor picked up a serf who was totally unequipped for the time travel lifestyle?  Also, if the Doctor was a bro, and rode a vespa?  You know what, just run with it.  “Monsters” is coming back on Thursday!

Sketch day comic!  I’m down in the Big Easy for a few days, so enjoy the world’s next great sci-fi epic: TIME BRO.

There were a couple of days last weekend where I was being all angsty and going “ARGH I NEED TO MAKE REAL ART NOT JUST DOODLE MONSTERS ARGH” and then watched some classic Doctor Who with the awesome Jen Overstreet and then I made a comic about Time Bro and his Serf sidekick.
